As a software engineer like many of you reading this post, I have on numerous occasions, traversed the chasm between being a coder and being a leader. It isn't an easy transition - but, it's been a journey well-cherished. One quality that can drastically smoothen this path is the ability to delegate in an empowering and effective manner.

Delegation does not mean passing the work to someone else's plate. Delegation also doesnt mean you have to be a leader with a high designation to delegate. Effective delegation means ensuring the work gets spread to the people who have time and skill to do it in most efficient manner possible. It is completely possible for a junior engineer can delegate tasks to an architect, a project manager or senior engineers if this delegation gets the work completed efficently.

This post aims to delve deep into understanding and effectively practicing the essential, yet often underestimated, art of delegation.

Delegating is more than passing tasks. It’s a strategic tool to upskill your team while freeing your time. To delegate effectively first and foremost you need the ability to cede some control. Quite often I've seen transitioning leaders unable to give up complete control and thus ending up taking on more and more work upon themselves. "No one can do this better than me" is a trap where budding leaders fall most often. Remember as a leader one of your responsibility is to ensure development for team in self sustainable way. Only after accepting this you can start on journey of learning effective delegation.

This also helps is spreading the work to best person available for "that" particular aspect of the work.
